Research Associate Position for the Estrildidae Project

Position Summary

​

We are currently seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of a Research Associate (RA) available for the Estrildidae Project. The position is domicile at A. P. Leventis Ornithological Research Institute (APLORI) Jos, Nigeria, and supported by the Natural History Museum, Oslo, ongoing sperm project. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator (Dr. Taiwo Crossby), the RA will carryout field and laboratory activities involving trapping and collection of sperm, blood and related samples from all bird species but with main focus on the Estrildidae Family. The RA will be expected to carryout field activities at APLORI and Elizade University field stations; and should be able to execute these activities with minimal supervision after a brief training. The position provide a stipend/allowance, and opportunity for learning how to collect biological samples, as well as laboratory processing, analysis and digital imaging of sperm cells.

Duties and Responsibilities

​

• The appointed RA will conduct search and monitor suitable location for trapping and sampling birds in the Estrildidae family;

• Partake in the laboratory processing and analysis of sperm samples;

• Maintain detailed, and accurate records of all collected samples in an organized manner: and

• Undertake other relevant duties as assigned or required.

Requirements and Qualifications

​

• Bachelors or Masters in Biology, Zoology, Wildlife Management, Conservation Biology, Ornithology, Ecology and related fields​​

• Past field research exposure and experience is an advantage

• Understand procedure for field activities and fundamental research principles is an advantage

• Solid working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office Suite

• Excellent knowledge and proficiency in English Language

• Mentally and physically healthy, the field is challenging and need able body.
