Research Field Assistants on the Population Genetics of the Village Weaver

Position Summary

​

We are currently seeking dedicated Research Field Assistants to join our field activities across the Geographical zones (GZs) of Nigeria for a project on the Population Genetics of Village Weaver Ploceus cucullatus. Under the supervision of the lead researcher (Dr. Crossby), you will search and map locations of weaver colonies in the states of the GZs; and partake in the sampling of the colonies during the field activities in the GZ applicable to you. The position provide a monthly stipend, opportunity for learning how to collect biological samples from birds, and also to collaborate with the lead researcher for higher learning degree projects. Applicants with a BSc and MSc in relevant fields and/or a PhD Student with space for field activities may apply for the position.

Duties and Responsibilities

​

  • Conduct search, monitor, map location and collect data and other information relevant for Village Weaver colonies in the GZs of Nigeria  

  • Partake in the field sampling activities and assisting with collection of samples from the weavers in the colonies

  • Maintain detailed, accurate records of all collected samples in an organized manner

  • Excellent knowledge of English and working knowledge of relevant local languages (Yoruba, Hausa or Ibo) in the GZ applicable to you

  • Act as conveyor/interpreter in exchange of routine information with communities’ members where necessary as part of community conservation education and awareness.

  • Undertake other relevant duties as required.

Requirements and Qualifications

​

  • BSc and MSc  in Biology, Zoology, Wildlife Management, Conservation Biology, Ornithology, Ecology and related fields​

    • A PhD student may apply​ but should contact me directly

  • Past field research exposure and experience is an advantage

  • Understanding procedure of the field activities and fundamental research principles is an advantage

  • Solid working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office Suite

  • Mentally and physically healthy, the field is challenging and need able body.
